CMBTC UNVEILED NEW CARGO QUALITY CARE PROGRAM

WINNIPEG - The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) has unveiled its' new Cargo Quality Care (CQC) program for CMBTC member malting barley exporters.

CMBTC has designed a new program that will be a quality value-added feature to those exporters participating in the program. The program involves taking an actual sample of a malting barley cargo as it is being loaded for export. That barley sample is then immediately analyzed, malted and then brewed with at CMBTC. The report on the analysis and malting performance is available to the end customer before the cargo reaches its' destination and the brewing data, before the barley is malted by the customer. This information can be used by the customer in processing the barley into malt and then brewing with the malt. "CQC has a tremendous potential to re-enforce to end users of Canadian malting barley the drive for quality in the production and delivery of our barley," said CMBTC Managing Director Rob McCaig. " I think that this information will give Canadian producers and grain handling companies a distinct advantage over other barley producing countries. The one-of-a-kind state-of-the-art malting and brewing facilities at CMBTC and the CQC will enable Canada to maintain its' reputation as a source of quality malting barley. While only available to current CMBTC members at present, we hope to be able to have all exports of Canadian malting barley on this program in the future " said McCaig. One customer receiving the CQC report through the exporter stated " The CMBTC CQC report confirmed my commitment to buy Canadian malting barley. I am amazed at the timeliness and information contained in the report. It certainly helps us in processing the barley, and the brewing data can help us in selling the malt to the breweries".

The CMBTC, which started in August 2000, is an independent, non-profit organization funded by members of the malting barley and malt industry. The CMBTC is the focal point for applied malting and brewing research, education of customers on the Canadian malting barley industry and provides technical support to members and clients. CMBTC facilities include a state-of-the-art pilot malting plant and pilot brewery, located in the Canadian Grain Commission Building . CMBTC members are Agricore United, Busch Agricultural Resources-Canada, Canadian Wheat Board, Canadian Grain Commission, Canadian International Grains Institute, Dominion Malting, James Richardson International, Quality Assured Seeds, the Public Barley Breeders, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, and SeCan.
