CMBTC Awarded Multi-Year Funding from Canadian Agriculture and Food International Program

WINNIPEG - The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) has announced that it has been successful in obtaining multi-year funding from the Canadian Agriculture and Food International Program (CAFI). CAFI is a Government of Canada program designed to fund organizations that provide technical support and aid in marketing and promotion of Canadian agricultural products.

CMBTC has been awarded $353,000 for 2004 and $368,000 for 2005.

"This funding will allow us to move forward with our programs that promote the use of Canadian malting barley and continue to work on research that benefits our members" said Rob McCaig Managing Director of the CMBTC.

The Honorable Bob Speller, Minister of Agriculture congratulated CMBTC on "its efforts to develop international market opportunities for Canadian agriculture and food products, and to gain recognition for Canada as the world leader in providing high quality, safe and innovative products produced in an environmentally responsible manner".

CMBTC is only the second educational and research organization to be awarded this multi-year funding. The CMBTC, operating since August 2000, is an independent, non-profit organization funded by members of the malting barley and malt industry. The CMBTC is the focal point for applied malting and brewing research, education of customers on the Canadian malting barley industry and provides technical support to members and clients. CMBTC facilities include a state-of-the-art pilot malting plant and pilot brewery, located in the Canadian Grain Commission Building . CMBTC members are Agricore United, Busch Agricultural Resources-Canada, the Canadian Wheat Board, Canadian Grain Commission, Canadian International Grains Institute, Dominion Malting, James Richardson International, Quality Assured Seeds, the Public Barley Breeders, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, and SeCan. The CMBTC also welcomes its newest members: Cargill AgHorizons, Alfred C. Toepfer ( Canada ) Ltd. and Parrish and Heimbecker Ltd.
