APRIL 3, 2006 UPDATE TO THE CMBTC RECOMMENDED MALTING BARLEY VARIETIES LIST 2006-07 WINNIPEG , Manitoba. More than expected demand is emerging for two six-row malting barley varieties, Robust and Lacey, for 2006-07. The most recent Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre Recommended List was published in November 2005 and identified the varieties expected to be selected by grain and malting companies for both domestic and export markets from the 2006 harvest. Although this List indicates there will be no domestic demand and limited export demand for the six-row malting barley variety Robust, more recent information is that a domestic buyer has indicated a firm interest in contracting and purchasing significant quantities of Robust for the 2006 crop year to supply a contract for a major US brewery. The same contract also has a requirement for Canadian grown six-row Lacey. Lacey was not listed as a variety on the recently published CMBTC Recommended List as this new US demand for that variety has also just emerged. “Canada Malting is actively recruiting producers to grow Robust and Lacey in 2006 to meet this new demand. This is good news for the producer, as the US brewing customer is looking to increase the percentage of Canadian grown malting barley in their blend” said Rob McCaig, Managing Director of CMBTC. The CMBTC, which started in August 2000, is an independent, non-profit organization funded by members of the malting barley and malt industry. The CMBTC is the focal point for applied malting and brewing research and provides technical support to members and clients. CMBTC facilities include a state-of-the-art pilot malting plant and pilot brewery, located in the Canadian Grain Commission Building. CMBTC members are Agricore United, Busch Agricultural Resources-Canada, Cargill AgHorizons, A.C. Toepfer Inc Canada, Canadian Wheat Board, Canadian Grain Commission, Canadian International Grains Institute, Rahr Malting Company, James Richardson International, FarmPure Seeds, the Public Barley Breeders, Parrish & Heimbecker, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Inc, and SeCan.
